Autism the Musical Wins Two Emmys
Awareness of autism has brought to bear some positive results. When the presidential candidate and other high profile and high ranking officials and individuals talk about autism at the national convention, it is encouraging to know that people who can help those who are fighting the fight for research and funding every day, are finally becoming aware and promising to do something to lend support to parents and families who know how hard the journey can be.
The fact that organizations such Autism Speaks, Defeat Autism Now, Generation Rescue and Autism Society of America have become household names and the places to go for information shows progress. The fact that the National Institutes of Health and the National Institutes of Mental Health, as well as The American Pediatric Society have now published diagnostic guidelines for autism shows progress.
There are other types of progress, as well. For instance, there is an amazing organization called The Miracle Project based in Los Angeles. This organization is a theater arts program that was founded by Elaine Hall and developed for children with autism and their brothers and sisters who do or do not have autism
In conjunction with HBO, The Miracle Project created a documentary called Autism: The Musical. The documentary shows the story of five of The Miracle Project's student's families who live with autism every day.
The story is based on how the children wrote, produced and performed in their own original music production. As Elaine Hall says, this feat was "seemingly against all odds."
This story, which was contributed to by hundreds of people and viewed by thousands upon thousands, is a milestone and a miracle in itself. Elaine Hall says she has received thousands of messages and emails telling her how deeply the HBO documentary touched their lives. One fourteen year old boy wrote and told her that after seeing Autism: The Musical he will never be ashamed of having autism again, in fact, he is proud of who he is.
That is the true miracle!
