Art and Philosophy - The Correlation and the Human Sphere
Art encompasses a wide range of human activities, creations, and expressions that are directly correlated to human emotions. These emotions may be borne out of experience or observation. If we connect Art and Philosophy, then art reflects the hidden connectivity between the different abstract thought processes in human mind. The branch of Philosophy, which considers Art, is called Aesthetics.
Literally speaking, Art includes Music, Painting, Sculptures, and Literature to name some. An Art is usually performed. We can say that anything creative, depicted well, with innate skills or training and practice, is said to be an Art. Different spheres of human activities such as, cooking, riding or driving a vehicle, painting, music, or even dressing up for a party, are all different Art activities only. Art is concerned with Philosophical elements such as, beauty, taste, and symbolism, of the several aspects of human interaction with the nature.
With art being a representation of human life in various forms, it can be categorized as follows:
• Visual Arts. It is defined as a medium of communication between emotions and ideas in a human mind. Visual Arts is a way of presenting the elements of nature in a manner that affects the sense of beauty. Traditionally, it involves Painting, Photography, and Sculpture.
• Fine Arts. They include Music, Dance, Theatre, Literature, and Poetry. Photography & Theatre gave birth to Movies.
Along with Philosophy, Technology too has had an enormous impact on Art. With the evolution of Animation, Multi-Media, Internet Art, and Electronic Music, etc, we have modernized Art. Decorative Arts & Crafts, Computer & Digital Art, Ceramic Art & Stoneware, and Communication Art, are some forms of modernized Art.
Philosophy, meaning 'love of knowledge' or 'love of wisdom', is of ancient Greek origin. It is an exploratory mode of determining the truths of life, whereas, art is a truth which explains our relationship with the nature and the universe. In the other words, Art deals with the fundamentals of life, including death, existence, beauty, and language whereas, Philosophy is a critical, systematic approach towards the problem concerning the truth of life.
As Henri Matisse wrote, "When we speak of Nature it is wrong to forget that we are ourselves a part of Nature. We ought to view ourselves with the same curiosity and openness with which we study a tree, the sky, or a thought, because we too are linked to the entire universe."
In today's life, we are sort of trying to overrule the fact, that we are integral to nature, belong to it. Instead, we are trying to tame it, which is a likely key to natural imbalance, and the difficulty of survival thereof. It is high time to recognize and work on Art, the Philosophical way.
